I wouldn’t hurt Henry like that. In fact, I would never kill anyone. Even Katherine, who I hated most in the world, I would never kill.

April 1531 – York Place, Kent

Eventually, the cook, Richard Roose, confessed to poisoning the soup. He was sentenced to a most slow and painful death; he was boiled to death. He deserved it, but I couldn’t help but wince when I imagined it. Henry’s mind was elsewhere, though. Being Supreme Head of the Church of England as far as the law of Christ allows was not currently helping our cause. People protested it, and in May, he was warned by the Pope that they must try the case in Rome. He reacted badly, as expected. He even went as far as to threaten that, with the help of France, he would march on Rome at the head of an army. Even though I talked him out of it and convinced him to simply get France’s support in our matter instead, he still mentioned it every now and then.
